Kdenlive is a mature, full-featured editor from the KDE community that now has local AI captions and object masks. The Concat video editor is a younger app that copies the CapCut workflow, with local AI voices and cutouts that work once their models are downloaded. Kdenlive suits longer projects. Concat suits fast vertical videos.
Is Concat better than Kdenlive?
The Concat video editor is easier for short social clips, but Kdenlive is the stronger editor overall. Kdenlive has proxy editing, a big effects library, multiple bins, OpenTimelineIO interchange and many years of fixes. The Concat video editor went public in August 2026 and is still labeled beta.
Where Concat pulls ahead is setup time. Caption and voice models download from one Settings screen and the cutout model downloads itself on first use. The tools then appear in the editor right away. In Kdenlive you enable the speech to text and object segmentation plugins first, then install their models.
How do the AI features compare?
Both editors run AI on your own machine and send nothing to the cloud.
- Captions. Kdenlive has used Whisper to build subtitle tracks since version 23.04 and can translate them into English. Concat uses whisper.cpp with Tiny, Base or Small models. In our test, Whisper Base handled a 7-second voiceover in about 20 seconds on the CPU.
- Background removal. Kdenlive 25.04 added object segmentation with Meta's SAM2 model, so you can mask a moving person or object. Concat has auto removal, custom removal (you paint the mask) and chroma key, with a 15 MB model.
- Voices. Kdenlive has no text to speech. The Concat video editor ships Kokoro, Pocket TTS and Chatterbox Turbo, including voice cloning from a short sample.

What will a Kdenlive user miss in Concat?
A lot of depth. Kdenlive has OpenTimelineIO import and export for moving timelines to other editors, plus years of community tutorials. Concat has no built-in template library. Its effects list is shorter too. Builds are unsigned, so you click past warnings on Windows and macOS. In our test of 0.2.7, an export also hung without an error until we renamed the output file because a file with the same name already existed.
What you gain is speed for small jobs. The Concat video editor opens on a tab bar with Media, Text, Stickers, Transitions, Effects, Filters and Templates. It has 16 title styles from Lower third to Pixel and audio cleanup on one switch. Several timelines can live in one project, so a long cut and a short teaser of the same footage stay together. Exports go up to 4K 60 fps with 10-bit color in H.264, HEVC or AV1.
When should you pick Kdenlive?
Pick Kdenlive for documentaries, tutorials, gaming videos and anything longer than a few minutes. It is a strong choice on Linux, where it is packaged by most distributions and fits a KDE Plasma desktop. Its release schedule follows KDE Gear, with bug fix updates in between. If you need object masks for effects work, SAM2 segmentation goes further than a simple cutout.
When should you pick the Concat video editor?
Pick the Concat video editor if you are moving from CapCut, make short vertical videos or want AI voiceover without a cloud service. The same app runs on Linux, Windows, macOS and Android, with an iPhone build for sideloading. It is free with no paywall and the source is on GitHub under the AGPL. Treat it as a beta and keep copies of your media. If something breaks, the Concat developers ask users to report it on the GitHub issue tracker.
