DaVinci Resolve is a professional editing, color and audio suite with a generous free version. The Concat video editor is a simple CapCut-style app. Resolve wins on depth and finishing quality, but its free version leaves out auto subtitles and the AI Neural Engine, which Concat covers in its own way at no cost.

## Is Concat better than DaVinci Resolve?

For short social videos with captions, the Concat video editor is quicker and gives you more AI tools for free. For anything where color, sound mixing or delivery specs matter, Resolve is in another class. It is a standard tool in film and TV post-production. Concat is a beta from a small open-source project that went public in August 2026.

The learning curve is the other big difference. Resolve splits work across pages (Cut, Edit, Fusion, Color, Fairlight and Deliver). New users often need a course before they feel at home. The Concat video editor shows one screen with a timeline and a tab bar. Anyone who has used CapCut will know where things are.

## What does the free DaVinci Resolve leave out?

Blackmagic Design's product page says the free version supports virtually all 8-bit formats up to Ultra HD 3840 x 2160 at 60 fps. Its September 2026 codec guide for Resolve 21.1 lists encoding at 4K or higher as a Studio feature, though, so free export limits depend on the codec and operating system. Check the current guide before relying on UHD export at 60 fps. Studio, at $295 one time, adds up to 32K at 120 fps, more 10-bit encoding options and the DaVinci AI Neural Engine with extra Resolve FX.

Auto subtitles are on the Studio side too. Guides from UT Austin and Subanana both list Create Subtitles from Audio as a Studio feature. Free users can type subtitles by hand or import an SRT file made elsewhere. The Concat video editor runs Whisper locally and drops styled captions on the timeline for free. In our test, Whisper Base took about 20 seconds for a 7-second voiceover on a CPU.

## What hardware do you need?

Resolve leans heavily on the GPU and is known for being demanding. Concat is lighter. On our test PC, a 32-second 1080p captioned project exported in about 40 seconds using software rendering on the CPU. That is slow, but it worked. The Concat video editor uses a GPU compositor and hardware decoding when your machine has them.

## Where does Concat fall short of Resolve?

Almost everywhere outside short-form work. Concat has filters, LUT import, color wheels, RGB and luma curves and a Scopes pane with waveform, RGB parade, vectorscope and histogram, but nothing like Resolve's node-based Color page. It has noise reduction, speech enhancement and loudness normalization, but nothing close to Fairlight. Builds are unsigned, so Windows and macOS warn you at install time. There is no built-in template library. We also hit an export that waited silently when the output file name already existed.

## When should you pick DaVinci Resolve?

Pick DaVinci Resolve if you want to learn editing as a skill, plan to grade footage from a real camera or need a mixer for podcasts and films. The free version is one of the best deals in software and many people never need Studio. It also runs on Linux, though support there is best on specific distributions.

## When should you pick the Concat video editor?

Pick the Concat video editor if you want captions, AI voiceover and cutouts on short clips without paying $295 or spending weeks learning. It installs on Android phones, where Resolve has no version at all. It also sideloads on iPhone. The concat free download needs no form and no account. Keep in mind that it is beta software and still has rough edges.

## Questions people ask

### Does the free DaVinci Resolve have auto subtitles?

No, according to the guides we found. Create Subtitles from Audio is listed as a Studio feature, while the free version supports manual subtitles and SRT import. Concat includes local auto captions for free.

### How much is DaVinci Resolve Studio?

Blackmagic Design lists DaVinci Resolve Studio 21 at $295 as a one-time purchase. Concat has no paid version.

### Is DaVinci Resolve open source?

No. DaVinci Resolve is free to download but closed source. Concat is open source under AGPL-3.0-or-later.

### Can the free DaVinci Resolve export 4K?

It depends on the codec. Blackmagic advertises free support for 8-bit formats up to Ultra HD 3840 x 2160 at 60 fps, but its September 2026 codec guide for Resolve 21.1 lists encoding at 4K or higher as a Studio feature. Check the current codec guide for your operating system before relying on UHD export at 60 fps.

### Do I need to register to download DaVinci Resolve?

Usually. Third-party guides say Blackmagic asks for a short form with your name, email and country before the free download. Concat downloads straight from GitHub with no form.
